  • "C. K. Stead's thriller 'Smith's Dream', about political tyranny and resistance in Godzone, loses nothing in its transference to the big screen. Director Roger Donaldson made every dollar count in what is still this country's best international-style movie. The main flaw is a weak ending and Sam Neill has his work cut out to make his reluctant hero leave a lasting impression. More memorable are Ian Mune and American "big name" Warren Oates." - NZ Listener, August 1982.
