This conference was to suggest an Arts blueprint for the next decade. The first speaker is Lord Goodman, Chairman of the British Arts Council who summarises his view of the conference and rejects universities serving a function as patrons of Artists. Dr. Coombes, Chancellor, Australian National University, disagrees and commends fellowship in the creative arts, which brings together artists, academics and students. John Prentice from the Canadian Arts Council talks about technology and support service for artists. Ron Bower, a New Zealand talks about making films. There is a panel discussion on "the creative artist in society".

Recording of the stage production "The Reason For Breakfast", performed by The Front Lawn at the Court Theatre in Wellington, 1986. it was performed as part of the International Arts Festival. Don McGlashan later described The Reason for Breakfast as "a piece about forgetting the simplest ritual, about how terrible losing that flimsy fabric that makes us human might be if we were to forget it. It's also about what happens in a place like New Zealand where kids can grow up in an absence of ritual, an absence of behaviour that has meaning in other parts of the world."

At the foot of the Urewera ranges lies Awhi Tapu - a desolate forestry village. With the forestry industry closed down, most have left - Wendyl, Sonny, Casper and Girl Girl have only each other and their fertile imaginations to rely on. Awhi Tapu is a story of loss, belonging, but most of all, friendship; it heralds a new wave of writing around Maori issues and characters; direct, unsentimental and challenging.

Purapurawhetu tells the story of a small community that has a painful, unacknowledged past which affects the present internal politics and hence cannot move on. Where have all the people gone? They have left because the place is full of sadness and no one knows why. A mysterious old woman comes into town one day while a young man tries to complete a tukutuku panel in time for the opening of the local marae. This woman reveals to him the hidden secrets and jealousy of times gone by; of a painful loss and why the old kaumatua is so broken. As the tale tumbles out, the tukutuku panel continues to be woven but will not be completed unless the loss is recognised, there is forgiveness, redemption and eventually healing.

Issac runs a tearooms in the middle of nowhere where he watches life and cars pass by each day. When two of his customers share a chance meeting he finds himself embroiled in something very sinister. Written by Briar Grace-Smith and starring Calvin Tuteao and Xavier Horan.

A collaboration between Bangarra Dance Theatre and The Australian Ballet, Warumuk - in the dark night was commissioned to celebrate The Australian Ballet's 50th anniversary. Created by Bangarra's Artistic Director Stephen Page, and bringing together dancers from both companies, the contemporary dance work is inspired by Aboriginal cultural stories of the night sky: it begins with the evening star and ends with the morning star. David Page's score provides a rich mix of soundscape and orchestral instruments interwoven with Aboriginal songs and languages. This production was filmed in 2012 at Arts Centre Melbourne, with Orchestra Victoria.
