The Naughty Bits The S Word

    Episode 1
In the first episode, The Naughty Bits looks at our unending fascination with sex and how what we’ve considered necessary to cover up has changed. Sex and nudity have always been hot button topics for New Zealanders: early missionaries to Aotearoa were known to make the unkindest alteration to Maori carvings by removing any sign of male genitalia; in the late 20th century a moral group led by Patricia Bartlett tried to remove smut from general life; and in the 21st century a library removed from its shelves an acclaimed book of pornography. Today we’re still confronted with the same dilemma - how naughty do The Naughty Bits have to be before someone get rids of them?

The Naughty Bits Free Speech and Sensitive Information

    Episode 3
Censorship is the act of controlling information. New Zealand history is full of times when the State has felt it necessary to constrict or even stop free speech completely. During wartime soldiers letters home were censored to stop sensitive information from getting into the enemies hands and even anti-war pacifist ideas were banned for fear of hurting the war effort. In 1951 the Government banned one side of an industrial dispute with laws which have been labelled as fascist. In the 21st century it’s argued PR has become the new political censorship. The Naughty Bits asks if there’s ever a good time for the public to be kept in the dark.
