New Zealand's Maori are on the warpath, and the Pakeha are trembling in their boots. Whenever the issue of land rights or reparations for Australia's aborigional inhabitants comes up the backlash crams meeting halls, excites petitions to parliament, and fills the media with hot air and bold headlines. So shrill has the outcry been that aborigines can't even secure a treaty recognising their rights. The New Zealand Maori have had such a treaty since 1840, though for much of the time since it's only had token force and been largely ignored by Wellington.

A look at international issues with the pick of overseas current affairs programmes from Television New Zealand (TVNZ).

  • 1Trick or Treaty? On the 150th anniversary of the signing of Te Tiriti o Waitangi, the Treaty of Waitangi, it has found a voice, and it should be getting through loud and clear to Pakeha on both sides of the Tasman.
