Before the start of the Second World War only Chinese men had worked and lived in New Zealand. They sent their earnings home and only very occasionally returned to visit their wives. With the Japanese invasion of South China, that was to change. The arrival in New Zealand of several hundred refugee women and children established the Chinese as part of the fabric of New Zealand life.
