Maori TV's live coverage of the finals of the Te Matatini National Kapa Haka Festival 2009. The biennial event held in Tauranga, 19-22 February 2009 features 36 groups representing 13 regions including Australia, competing in a highly skilled and disciplined demonstration of the Māori performing arts. Teams perform six disciplines which make up the aggregate ? Whakaeke (choreographed entry), Mōteatea (traditional chant), Poi, Waiata-ā-ringa (action song), Haka and Whakawātea (exit). Each team consists of up to 40 members and it is not uncommon to find grandparents performing alongside their children and grandchildren. The Festival has been running for more than 36 years and in 2009 will feature an education day involving kapa haka workshops for primary and intermediate children.
