This documentary film by Adrianne Rikihana looks at the suppressed art of the women’s haka. Made at the Auckland Institute of Technology for the Bachelor of Communication Studies, 1994. Archival stills are interspersed throughout the documentary. The women below explain the haka: its history within their own tribes, how European settlers saw and interpreted the haka in history books and where it is today in Māori society, particularly where women are concerned.
