People Like Us: To Commemorate the Consecration of Te Whakahuihui Vercoe, Bishop of Aotearoa. At dawn elders of the Ngāti Pikiao tribe sing in tribute to their ancestral house Haumaitāwhiti, on the shores of Lake Rotoiti. Three centuries ago their people arrived here from Maketū in the Bay of Plenty, and settled here. This century another treasure is entrusted to their care, the Bishop of Aotearoa. Today they remember the Bishops that have gone before, Frederick Augustus Bennett, Wiremu Netana Panapa and recall the ministry of Manu Augustus Bennett, the retiring Bishop and most importantly the consecration of the new Bishop of Aotearoa, Whakahuihui Vercoe. More than 12 Marae in the area are participating in the celebrations. At 52 years of age Whakahuihui Vercoe brings to his new ministry 30 years of experience. All religious denominations participated in making this ceremony a memorable one.
