A documentary made to celebrate the centenary of the gifting of Tongariro National Park to the nation by its Māori owners. In 1887 Māori land was gifted to the nation making Tongariro the world’s sixth National Park. Since then eleven other National Parks have been set aside for enjoyment in New Zealand. This is the legend of Ngātoroirangi, high priest and navigator of the Arawa canoe. Includes brief shots of the small Waihi village and marae. Still archival shots of early pioneer developments are shown. Te Heuheu Tukino chief of the Tūwharetoa tribe, introduced his vision of National Parks by gifting Tongariro mountain to the nation.
