  • 2A young would-be comedian gained media exposure this week by launching a brand new organisation on the internet. Guy Williams established a website under the bogus name of 'Commercial Whaling New Zealand' and then put out a press release announcing a public petition backing commercial whaling. He then offered himself up for comment in the media under the made up name of 'Jay Pryor'. Williams is a sidekick to Jono Pryor, the star of C4's comedy show 'The Jono Project' which goes out of its way to make the news media look daft. Was Williams' publicity stunt irresponsible and tacky? Or did it do us all a favour by highlighting serious flaws in the news media? Peacock and Rose report on recent hoaxes and conflicts of interest featured in the media. • 3This week, publishing company Fairfax announced a significant re-think of its business news operations, and signalled the end for the longstanding weekly business paper 'The Independent'. When Fairfax media reported the proposed changes through using its own media outlets, the focus was on what it called a 'major expansion' of its business journalism. • 4Last week on Mediawatch we heard how TVNZ marked the fiftieth anniversary of television in New Zealand with a two-hour quiz show on TV1 on 1 June 2010, in which various television stars competed to identify catchphrases, theme-tunes and advertisements from the past half century. While the stars in the audience looked like they were having a good time, a number of home viewers were not impressed. Debates surrounding these issues serve as an illustration of New Zealand's current free-to-air set up: four commercial channels, all able to run subsidised local content funded by taxpayers, but none of them committed to public service television broadcasting for New Zealanders.
