2In the past three months, two young children have required liver transplants after overdosing on paracetamol. While accidental overdoses can sometimes occur, paediatricians are warning about over-prescription and chronic overuse of this common pain relief and anti-fever drug, saying that children's health is being placed at risk. Dr Ross Wilson, a Capital and Coast District Health Board Paediatrician, wants a review of the way drugs, including those available in supermarkets, are dispensed. Joining him is Dr Michael Beasley, National Poisons Centre Medical Toxicologist.
