  • 1Are prison terms the answer for dealing with the worst student offenders? School principals are calling for more extreme punishments for students who repeatedly bully or fight. The Secondary Principals' Association says prison sentences, fines and reparations should be used more to deter young offenders and also points to increasing rates of violence among female students as being behind the 23-percent rise in recorded offences at schools or educational institutes since 2004.

  • 2As the baby boomers hit retirement age - at the rate of 100-thousand a year from now onward - more are being expected to remain in work for longer though how can that be achieved when age discrimination is rife. By mid-century 1 in 4 New Zealanders will be 65 or over. In the government's report 'The Business of Ageing' the focus has been shifted from the financial strain put on its books to a focus on potential economic boom if the over 65s keep working.
