  • 1The Government announcement that the number of mining inspectors will increase fourfold. Mining industry veterans have been warning for years that the dismantling of the inspection service in the 1990's would put lives at risk. The new High Hazards unit will have 4-inspectors for mines and another 4-inspectors for the petroleum sector. There is currently only one mining inspector for the whole of New Zealand and another position vacant.
