1[Whakāmaori] Shortland Street Theme Back when TV opening themes just hit differently, our panel go back to the 90's and translate the theme song of one of our favourite soaps.
Is it you or is it me?
The iconic opening line from the Shortland Street theme, a staple series on television today. Our hosts are experienced in the world of composing songs, translating popular movies like Sponge Bob Tarau Porowhā (Sponge Bob Square Pants) and Kimo Houltham is an actor and presenter, but how will the panel fair in translating this classic gem?
Written by Graham Bollard and performed by Tina Cross. Let the real life drama unfold as the panel dig deep into their pātaka kupu (dictionary) to capture the essence of the song.

The Caribbean Southern Stars, a steelpan orchestra that used the Marist Rugby league clubrooms in Mt Albert as a rehearsal space and to store their instruments, have lost a crucial part of their cultural group to a fire last week.
The blaze entirely gutted the club rooms destroying all the band's instruments and equipment that had been stored there, along with club trophies and about a 100 years of history.
The Marist Saints rugby club was founded in 1919 and the clubrooms moved to Murray Hallberg park in Mt Albert in the 1970s. Over the years the association of this place grew beyond rugby for community members as a cultural space.
In this episode we chat to Camille Nakhid of AUT, founder of the steelpan orchestra The Caribbean Southern Stars about the history of steelpans in the Caribbean, and the band here in New Zealand that was set up back in 2005.

Whakamāori 2 E10: Shortland Street Theme Song
Nā Kimo Houltham
Is it you or is it me?
Lately I've been lost it seems.
I think a change is what I need.
If I'm looking for a chance or to dream
Shortland Street...
Taking time to hold my place.
Yesterday's another race
Just living for the times we've seen.
When the writing's on the wall says I'll be
Shortland Street...
If you want to find a way of searching for
another world,
It's hard to see.
Shortland Street...
Ko koe rānei, ko ahau kē
Nō nā tata nei, kua ngaro au e
He panonitanga pea tāku e mahara nei
Pēna he pohewatanga tāku e aru nei
Te tiriti a Waihoroi
Ka whakaarohia taku wāhi i tēnei ao
Waiho i te inamata ki tōna ake wao
Tukuna mai te onamata
Mā wai rā taku mate e kimi
Te tiriti a Waihoroi
Mehemea he ao hou tāu e kimi nā,
Whaia rawa
Nā Hana Mereraiha

Version 1: Hōtarana
Hurihuri kau ana
Ngā taero o pohewa
Ka anga atu ki hea?
I puta noa i te moemoeā
Hōtarana
Puritia tō kāenga
Tainahi kua ea
He rā anō ka kitea
E puta anō ai (koe) ki te ora
Hōtarana
Whāia he ara hōu, he tiriti kei tua rā
Maea ana?
