Waitomo to Santoft Forest. A trip through the wonderous caves of Waitomo and a somewhat dubious crack at sheep shearing’s only part of the charm on this leg of the trail. There’s also one of the last kahikatea forests and a bit of trail repair as Pio takes the trail through the middle of the North Island.

Te Araroa: Tales from the Trails is a fresh look at Aotearoa by foot, allowing Pio Terei to connect with the people and local histories in a very real way. All the while, the unspoilt landscapes hark back to a time when Māori and Pākehā explorers first encountered this land.
