Whāngārā-Mai-Tawhiti was first established in 1961, and then revived in 1976. The group as we know it today, was formed in 1995, following requests from local Whāngārā elders who wished to keep the customs and traditions of Ngāti Konohi alive. Under the tutelage of renowned Māori culture exponent, Derek Lardelli, Whāngārā have cemented their presence at national level over the years.
