In 1942, with General Douglas MacArthur's position in the Philippines hopeless after Japan's destruction of more than half the planes in his Far East Command, he leaves pledging "I will return." MacArthur does return, winning victories in the Pacific. He developed Presidential aspirations, but while serving in Korea his colossal ego and insubordination results in dismissal by Truman.
