In the late 20th century a new cycle of 'greed is good' economics raised inequalities between rich and poor. Growing Māori unemployment led to poverty. New leadership and heroes are sought and found to give courage to the Māori fight for survival.

From an imagined point one thousand years into the future, we give a sliver of our recent history the perspective of distance. We consider the 21 years after the 1984 Hui Taumata when a resurgent Māori people confronted their oppression and survived.
