The Māori language started to re-shape the national story of New Zealand, and led to new indigenous social and political forces. In 2005 the Hui Taumata generation came of age.

From an imagined point one thousand years into the future, we give a sliver of our recent history the perspective of distance. We consider the 21 years after the 1984 Hui Taumata when a resurgent Māori people confronted their oppression and survived.
