  • 1Flight 901: The Erebus Disaster The crash of an Air New Zealand DC-10 into the slopes of Mount Erebus in November 1979 was a tragedy that was first played out against the vast frozen backdrop of Antarctica, then in a Royal Commission of Inquiry in Auckland, and again for the Court of Appeal and the Privy Council in London. It is now the subject of a new book by the man who led the Royal Commission of Inquiry, Judge Peter Mahon. Mahon himself did not come out unscathed by the drama. Both the New Zealand Court of Appeal and the Privy Council ruling against one claim of his report: that Air New Zealand had conspired to present false evidence and orchestrated a litany of lies, was found to be outside his jurisdiction and a denial of natural justice. His finding that the airline rather than the pilots were at fault, stands. A summary of the acts of the Erebus drama,

  • 2Interview with Peter Mahon The crash of an Air New Zealand DC-10 into the slopes of Mount Erebus in November 1979 was a tragedy. In 1981 Air New Zealand and other parties, including the former chief executive of the airline Morrie Davis called for a review of some of Peter Mahon's findings. The Court of Appeal found that he had overstepped the bounds of natural justice because they found no evidence of predetermined plans of deception by the airline executives to conceal the true case of the disaster. Interview with Mahon about the claims made in his new book 'Verdict on Erebus'.
