  • 2Conflicting reports continue to pour in about what is happening at the Chernobyl nuclear power station. Scientists say the latest images indicate that the fire in the nuclear reactor has been put out. However, a Soviet embassy official has told the United States Congress that the disaster is not yet over, and could still threaten people both inside and outside the Soviet Union. A group of British tourists have arrived back in London, having been in Kiev when the nuclear disaster occurred. The Soviet Union has formally turned down an American offer of help in the wake of the Chernobyl disaster, prompting the Reagan Administration to criticise the Soviet Union, saying it should be much more open in relation to releasing information about the disaster.
