  • 1National Party Leadership The 50th jubilee celebrations of the National Party ended yesterday with the election of a new Party President. However, this was quickly followed by former leader Jim McLay's announcement that he is to quit politics. The convention itself endeavoured to put a brave face on things, but independent commentators believe National still has a long road ahead if they want to regain the Government. There is still the absence of firm policy on major issues; the Dr Ian Shearer row drags on; party membership and finances are flagging. Discussion and viewer talkback with the new National Party President, Christchurch lawyer and businessman Neville Young.
