  • 1National Superannuation The Government is presently carrying out a major review of benefits and welfare services provided by the State. Two-thirds of all benefits being paid are superannuation payments. Therefore, fifteen percent of all Government expenditure is currently being paid out to half a million New Zealanders over the age of sixty. It is currently estimated that each superannuitant is being supported by three people in the workforce. By the year 2030, that number of people in paid employment is likely to halve, while the number of superannuitants increases. Is national superannuation too expensive to be retained in its current form? Should taxpayers be guaranteed a pension upon retirement at sixty as a reward for paying taxes all their working life? Discussion and viewer talkback with James O'Neil, author of a comprehensive report on superannuation in New Zealand.
