  • 1Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) The American Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) has strictures preventing it operating within Commonwealth countries. However, claims have been made that the agency has ways of getting around that restriction. Novels and television programmes tend to portray the CIA as a shadowy, sinister, clumsy (in comparison to the British MI6), pervasive, extreme right-wing arm of the American Government, in effect, the United States President's "personal gang". Critics say its job is to overthrow Governments perceived as unfriendly to the United States. But are the CIA any worse than any other intelligence agency? Don't they have a duty and a right to protect their country and government from hostile elements? Discussion and viewer feedback about how the CIA operates with former CIA operative Ralph McGehee who has written a book about his experiences called 'Deadly Deceits'.
