A daily, midday, news package which featured an in depth interview about a current news topic. Viewers could phone in and ask questions of the key interviewee.

  • 1Drinking Habits At the current Commission of Inquiry into Violence, a Christchurch publican has testified that he lived with a "tight knot of fear" in his stomach while he watched criminals doing their business with drugs, stolen goods and plans for further crie in his bar. As a retired police officer, he claimed he saw more criminals in his public bar than in all his time policing the streets of Auckland. The Hotel Association supported huis view, and claimed every member of the Association in the North Island had seen patroins carrying weapons into their pubs, and many had been victims of violence themselves. Why are many honest pub patrons too scared to use the restrooms out of fear for their safety? Is it just alcohol that is to blame, or are drugs also involved? Is it the gangs causing trouble, or just ordinary men drinking too much? Are women also to blame? What are the solutions? Discussion and viewer talkback with the chief executive of the Hotel Association Tom Sheehy, who advocates closing all public bars around New Zealand.

  • 2At a news conference in Moscow, unprecedented in its openness, Soviet officials said six safety rules were broken at Chernobyl, and the accident occurred largely due to complacency at the nuclear power station. The accident is said to have killed 31 people so far, with 203 people still sick with radiation sickness. 203,000 people have been forced to evacuate their homes because of radiation fallout. American officials and scientists are weighing up the Chernobyl accident and considering whether it could happen at any of the nuclear plants in the United States.
