A daily, midday, news package which featured an in depth interview about a current news topic. Viewers could phone in and ask questions of the key interviewee.

  • 1The Trade Union Movement At New Zealand Steel's Glenbrook mill, a petty squabble about which union's tea lady was going to make the tea was the last straw in a series of running battles which has seen work on the mill's expansion site brought to a halt. This coincides with the closure of the Tasman Pulp and Paper mill in Kawerau, because of a dispute between management and the twelve unions representing the workers at the mill. In Kawerau, an entire community has been brought to its knees. Prominent unionist Rob Campbell has decided to leave the Federation f Labour (FOL) because of disenchantment with the way in which the FOL is responding to union needs of the 1980s. In this decade, the development of technology has resulted in job losses in the meatworks freezing industry and car assembly plants. Are New Zealand's trade union leaders adapting to modern times? Are they holding fast to outdated attitudes? Are unions relics of a bygone era? Have they failed to keep pace with a changing economic and political environment? Are there too many trade unions? Discussion and viewer talkback with Ray Bianchi, site advocate for the Labourers' Union at the Glenbrook Steel Mill.
