1The Western world has long held a fascination with India - the traditions of the Raj and the empire, a glamourous and exotic society that was different yet safe for the English ruling classes. Beyond the picture of pageantry and the image of starving masses however, is a new India, a major military power in a super-sensitive region. India is a non-aligned but nuclear-capable nation that has been at war four times since becoming independent in 1947. Since 1947, one family has dominated India and its relations with the world - Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, his daughter Indira Gandhi and his grandson Rajiv Gandhi.
