  • 1The forced sale of a Waikato farm was called off today, less than 24 hours after angry farmers effectively stopped the auction of a Manawatu farm.

  • 2The Secretary of Maori Affairs, Dr Tamati Reedy is to retain his job, following an inquiry by the State Services Commission into the Maori loans affair. He will, however, be assigned an assistant. The Government went on the offensive in Parliament this afternoon, targeting Opposition MP Winston Peters who claimed he had further evidence of Government wrongdoing.

  • 3South Island fire fighters are threatening strike action for two hours each day, angered by a lack of action on their pay claim.

  • 4Latest figures show food prices rose only slightly in the last month, which is likely to be comforting to the Government who hope to fight the next general election based on their economic progress.

  • 5Auckland fish retailers claim they are being forced to buy on the Black market in order to stay in business, because the Government's new fish quota system is leading to a shortage of fish caught and made available to sell legally.

  • 9One hundred and forty Soviet dissidents have been released from prison, and authorities say they may free more.

  • 10Following yesterday's embarrassing bank robbery in Marseilles, French police are beginning to realise how easily they were duped by the robbers.

  • 11New Zealand has one of the highest rates of Rheumatic Fever in the world, third only to Soweto and Egypt. A Congress of cardiologists from Asia and the Pacific will open tonight in Auckland, where New Zealand's high rate of the disease will be a hot topic for discussion.

  • 12A group of four jumpers leapt from the top of the Auckland Harbour Bridge today, and suffered no injuries thanks to careful planning and an ability to 'bounce back'.

  • 13Levin is a world leader in sewage disposal.

  • 14A baby camel is gradually being nursed back to health in New Plymouth.
