  • 1In an upset election result in Fiji today, the indigenous-led conservative Alliance Government of Prime Minister Ratu Sir Kamisese Mara has been replaced with a multi-ethnic Labour-led coalition supported mostly by the Indo-Fijian plurality, whose policies include banning nuclear ship visits. Fiji's new Prime MInister elect is Dr Timoci Bavadra, a newcomer to politics. The transition of power is expected to go smoothly, despite the Fijian Army being comprised of mostly ethnic Fijians.
