  • 1Maori Land Claims It is estimated that the Waitangi Tribunal could hear over 2000 land claims from various Maori groups seeking redress from what they believe to be past injustices. Most of these claims only affect Crown property and lease-hold and the Government said it will not accept recommendations affecting private free-hold. But as the size of claims becomes apparent, and as one group in Katikati attempts to take back land by proclamation, there is growing unease on the possible effects on race relations in New Zealand. Includes: Heylen Research Poll. The poll put three statements to 1000 people and asked how strongly they reacted. The statements were: 1. Understanding Maori culture is an essential part of being a New Zealander. 2. Compensation is due to the Maori people for land losses. 3. Maori claims under the Treaty of Waitangi threaten racial harmony in New Zealand.

  • 2Crime in New Zealand Reported violent crime rose by almost 10% in 1987, underscoring already widespread concern by the public, the New Zealand Police, and politicians about New Zealanders' conduct towards each other. A discussion of the seriousness of the violent crime rate.
