1Election day in New Caledonia has been disrupted by Melanesian Kanaks calling for independence. They continue to hold 27 gendarmes prisoner on the island of Ouvea and have launched a campaign of roadblocks, cut power and telephone lines and in one region fired at random at cars driving past. Several people have been injured in today's violence.
