1The New Zealand Dairy Board is being offered a new high-tech product which, when injected into cows, boosts milk production by 20%. If adopted in New Zealand, it would give the Dairy Board an enormous advantage over its competitors. However, the drug knows an Bovine somatotropin (BST) is only experimental and its possible side effects are unknown. Consumer groups from overseas are already organising against it and its use could provoke an international boycott of New Zealand's $1.7 billion dairy industry. It is a no-win situation for the Dairy Board, with New Zealand dairy exports at risk regardless of its decision.
