  • 1Medical Malpractice in New Zealand The disregard of patients' rights was brought out into the open earlier this year with the inquiry into cervical cancer research at Auckland's National Women's Hospital. That inquiry dealt a severe blow to the standing of the medical profession, and revealed the tragic consequences of research that puts knowledge before human life. In this episode, Frontline presents further cases which show there is still a lack of patient protection when doctors pursue medical progress. This episode beings with an extraordinary chapter from New Zealand's medical history known as the Hawkes Bay experience. Like the experiment at National Women's it occurred mainly in the 1960s and early 70s, and within a few years was widely discussed but only in medical circles. The end result was that people died. The public was never told why.
