1In Jamaica it’s ganja. In Times Square they push smoke. In New Zealand it’s just dope. It’s marijuana and it’s illegal. For 30 years we have debated it should remain so. And now the drug advisory committee has recommended the Government change the law so minor cannabis offences by adults are no longer dealt with in the courts, and no longer result in criminal convictions. That committee told Health Minister Helen Clark that New Zealand should follow the South Australian model. There, minor offences are dealt with by instant fines, just like getting a parking ticket. The drug advisory committee includes scientists, doctors, and drug abuse professionals. The police are also represented, but didn’t attend the meeting that called for change, and distanced themselves from any move to soften the cannabis laws.
