  • 1Preparing for Life In ten years there could be as many as 9000 people in New Zealand prisons; an increase from around 3000 now. It will make New Zealand one of the most imprisoned societies in the Western world. But putting people in jail doesn’t seem to be working. Perhaps the most telling illustration of how prisons are failing is with inmates with drug problems. Instead of getting inmates off drugs, it’s almost as if prisons could actually be providing inmates with a Government assisted drug habit. Melissa da Souza-Correa and Terence Taylor report on the problems of drugs in prisons and a possible solution.
