- The servicemen served aboard the Naval ships HMNZS Pukaki and HMNZS Rotoiti. In 1957, Rotoiti, in company with Pukaki, participated in Operation Grapple, the series of nuclear tests carried out by the British at Christmas and Malden Islands. Their duties were to act as weather ships and also to observe the tests.
