1Telecom has been sold for $4.25 billion, with the majority of the company being sold to American companies. Finance Minister David Caygill has hinted strongly at the possibility of pre-election tax cuts thanks to the sale of Telecom, although he has given no specifics. Opposition leader Jim Bolger wants to return the control of Telecom to New Zealanders, but has not given details as to how this would be done.
