Green Party of New Zealand closing 1990 (2.00)
Announcer: “Diane Gatward, your subject is the Green Party of Aotearoa New Zealand. Two minutes on that topic starting now.
Is the Green Party a serious contender in the election?
Diane Gatward. Green’s Candidate for East Coast Bays: “Yes, opinion polls indicate the Greens are already the third major party in New Zealand.”
Announcer: Correct. How does the Green Party view its future electoral chances?
Gatward: “The Green Party can hold the balance of power within 24 hours, and be the government within 10 years.”
Announcer: “Correct. What are the Green Party central policies?”
Gatward: “Care for the people and care for the earth.”
Announcer: More information please.”
Gatward: “Care for people means a Green government would not take any action that promotes suffering or injustice. Care for the earth means not damaging or endangering the planet which sustains us.”
Announcer: “Correct. What is the basis of the Green Party’s economic policy?”
Gatward: “To encourage economic self-reliance through responsible management of our considerable national resources. To discourage excessive consumption and unsustainable growth.”
Announcer: “Correct. How will the Green Party tackle the problem of unemployment?”
Gatward: “A Green economy is a labour-intensive economy. Eight thousand new jobs can be created in energy conservation alone. Then there is forestry, farming, tourism and manufacturing.”
Announcer: “Correct. What is the Green Party’s policy on proportional representation?”
Gatward: “The introduction of proportional representation is official Green Party policy.”
Announcer: “Correct. How will the other major parties …(question and answer not audible)
Announcer: “Define the potential Green Party voter?”
Gatward: “Has a realistic vision of the future. More concerned with the quality of life than with material possessions. Thinks people come before profits. Thinks we’d be better off with less party squabbling and more cooperation. Wants to change our existing two-party system. Would like New Zealand to return to being a good country to bring up children. Is aged between 18 and 108. Is male or female, rich or poor. Has had a gutsful of the other lot and is willing to take a calculated risk on some good people who are determined to make a better world.”
Announcer: “Correct.”

1990 closing address Democratic Party (20.00-
Gary Knapp. Leader NZ Democratic Party: “In just 48 hours you have your say. Finally, after three years you can show the government just what you feel about how things have been managed. You can show them just what you think about how you’ve been treated. It is the one day in three years they let you have a say. In between times they run riot, breaking promise after promise without a second thought for your feelings, or what you want. Apart from election time, they don’t care a damn. The thing that worries me about that is that it does matter what you think, it does matter what you feel. It is my view that if things are being done that you don’t agree with, the end result will be failure. And that is what we’ve had for nearly twenty years now: failure. Our country has never been in a bigger mess. Do you really think changing from Labour to National will make any difference? I don’t. We’ll have more of the same. Promises, promises. National will spend its first year in office telling us what a shocking state Labour left the economy in. And how they just can’t deliver on their promises as a result. Sound familiar?
Democrat members of Parliament will be a force for real change. We’ve proven that we can make a difference and get things done. Look at the record in East Coast Bays. Harbour bridge tolls removed. The North Shore hospital built. Northern motorway completed. Post offices opened not closed, all because a Democrat MP was elected. But more importantly, Democrats are totally committed to giving you an honest voting system through proportional representation. That means Parliament will properly represent all of us (NZ flag in background). We are committed to giving you, the voter, power between elections so you can have your say on the big decisions through the introduction of citizens referenda policies. Our MPs will keep National and Labour honest. Vote Democrat this Saturday; it is time you had your say.
Text: Democrats. It’s time you had your say.
New Labour Party closing broadcast 1990 (2.00)
Jim Anderton: “I’m Jim Anderton, leader of the New Labour Party. Tomorrow your vote will shape the future. So think for a moment about the last 15 years. Fifteen years of governments who forgot about the people. Nine years of National. They brought New Zealand to its knees. Then six of Labour with broken promise after broken promise. They betrayed New Zealand. You know in every city and every town once prosperous industries are now closed, the workforce laid off. Over 200,000 New Zealanders are unemployed. There is hardly a family in New Zealand that hasn’t been affected. It has to stop. Your vote can change all of this.
Newspaper headline: Pressure to cross wall remains high.
Anderton: “Who would have thought a year ago that the Berlin Wall would fall, that East and West Germany would be reunited, that the communist dictatorship would be swept aside. But it has happened, and it has happened because people were prepared to fight for change.
In New Zealand we have democracy already. And yet because of incompetent governments, our health system is worse, education is no longer free, we’ve lost control of our own assets, and we’re facing a crisis in unemployment. The New Labour party is the only party that has given you straight answers and sensible policies. We represent fairness and balance, jobs, free health and education, affordable housing, sound economic policies that offer environmental protection as well.”
NLP. New Labour Party.
“You should fight for change with your vote. Vote for New Labour.”
“So, if you value honesty, vote for New Labour. If you value a caring society, vote for New Labour. If you value employment, over unemployment, vote for New Labour. And if you value the future vote for New Labour. And it won’t be a wasted vote. Voting for the things you really want is never wasted. It is the most sensible and democratic thing you can do.
NLP. New Labour Party.
Social Credit closing 1990 (23.00-25.00)
Bruce Beetham. Leader Social Credit NZ: “Good evening. Over the last nine years National and Labour have railroaded you into the dark. Between them, they’ve come very close to ruining this country. Neither of them even deserves to be the opposition, let alone the government.
National offers no economic alternative. Just a harsher version of Rogernomics, or more Muldoonism if that faction gets the upper hand, and even worse unemployment. And surely you won’t let your total disillusionment with Labour entice you into restoring the same old, arrogant National administration you could hardly wait to get rid of only six years ago. Your woes don’t end there either. Both New Labour, and their closet allies the Democrats, would re-smother the economy with a blanket of restrictions. And the Greens have no detailed or workable policy on anything but the environment. That leaves Social Credit, which is offering the only other alternative economic policy that can be used. All the others have now been tried and found badly wanting.
Social Credit’s policies are fully geared to solving the big problems of the late twentieth century. And especially how to use the new employment threatening technology to reduce working hours, whilst protecting incomes and the environment for an improved standard of living and quality of life. Whatever you do don’t protest by not voting at all. That just punishes the innocent, and allows the National and Labour party faithful to decide the result between them. Come out of the tunnel and into the light. Vote Social Credit New Zealand. Way to go.
