Announcer: “On October the 12th New Zealanders will vote in their first MMP election. Many see this as a time to consider the values they are looking for in future government.
Woman: “What I’d like to see come out of MMP would be honesty. Politicians you can trust.
Man: “I’d vote for a party that is going to be absolutely honest with the people that are voting it in. A party that is good for New Zealand, not just for any single group of people.
Woman: “I would vote for a political party that had a sense of purpose and vision and wasn’t just concerned with the economics.
Man: “I’m looking for a party that has got some principles so I know its future policies are going to be based on those principles, and not just on what they think will win them votes, or what they think is popular.
Christian Coalition
For such a time as this…
Graham Capill, Co-Leader: “Under this system we’ve got the opportunity to actually have that voice there, influence Parliament, in no other way. And we believe there is a desperate need, when you have got quarter of your homes that are single parent homes, when you’ve got dishonesty and lack of integrity in politicians, this is the time that we need to go back to these values. Otherwise we are sunk as a nation.
Annetta Moran, List Candidate: “I see it as a unique window of opportunity for smaller parties like us. And really a unique opportunity for the pro-family, Christian viewpoint to be heard.
Hon. Graham Lee, Co-Leader. “This is an opportunity, brought about by MMP certainly, but an opportunity to help in a party that has got unique advantages, unique answers, unique solutions to New Zealand’s problems of this day.
The Family
Moran: “Well the family is really the basic building block of society. I think it is the glue that holds our whole society together. And I think the health of the family is reflected in the health of the nation. I believe too that the best form of social welfare is the family.
The Family
Uphold the sanctity of life
Encourage commitment to marriage
Invest in Home Carers allowance
Reduce excessive media violence
Law and Order
Justice for victims
John Jamieson C.B.E. List candidate. NZ Police Commissioner 1989-93: “Over recent years we’ve introduced legislation which has addressed the rights of people
Announcer: “Retired Police Commissioner John Jamieson, CBE, represents the Christian Coalition portfolio on law and order. And brings with this role a qualified concern for the justice system.”
Jamieson: “So what we have now is a whole series of new laws addressing civil rights, but in the criminal scene regarding those rights as lying solely with offenders and not with victims.”
Law and Order
Full restitution for victims
Confiscation of proceeds of crime
Longer sentences for violent crimes
More community policing.
Education
Bruce Logan, Education Advisor: “Now if the state is going to organize a compulsory system, paid by the taxpayer, then it is only just that all the people get the kind of education they want. Therefore if the state is going to finance education, as it does, then it must finance everybody equally, private and state.”
Education
Encourage private education.
Promote responsible citizenship
Encourage parental involvement
Support performance based pay
The Economy
Ewen McQueen, List Candidate: “For a sound economic long-term policy you need to address values issues because those are the issues that are causing the costs in our economy. And you know you can’t fix up families overnight, we know that, but what we are saying is we need to start promoting those values that will keep our families together. That will get New Zealanders to save. That will promote more responsible citizenship. And then in the long term we will see the fruit from that in terms of lower costs in our economy.
The Economy
Maintain low tax/low inflation
Abolish surtax on superannuation
Greater rebates for charitable donations
Endorse the Reserve Bank Act
Lee: “All the answers to date have failed to change the nation; rather they have exacerbated the social problems we face now.”
Moran: “All the social commentators, all the counsellors, government policy writers are saying, in the west, in western democracies, the family is in trouble.”
Capill: “You see what we are going into this election campaign with is a choice. It is a real alternative. And we are saying to New Zealanders a lot of the problems we’ve had in the past have come about because we’ve forgotten these principles.”
Jamieson: “We can be one of those groups that can help bring back a balance that would be beneficial for everybody who lives in New Zealand.”
Capill: “You don’t have to buy into our principles, but we are offering you a real alternative to all of the other parties.”
Announcer and text: “Give your party vote to the Christian Coalition. The only
Pro-Family
Pro-Life
Pro-Values party.
Vote Christian Coalition.”
