  • 1Shoot – don't shoot "Shoot - Don't Shoot": A former top police officer says Constable A should never have shot Steven Wallace in Waitara last year. However the police defend Constable A's actions. Correspondent: Kim Webby Producer: Damien Comerford The New Zealand Police investigation and report that justifies the shooting of Steven Wallace by Constable 'A' has been slammed by a US expert and by a former New Zealand police sergeant. They both say that when faced with the decision "Shoot; Don't Shoot" Constable 'A' made the wrong choice. 60 Minutes retained former Santa Monica police sergeant Frank Saunders to review the New Zealand Police report and the accounts of witnesses. Saunders is a cop who also killed in the line of duty. However his attacker was armed and shot first. What Frank Saunders has to say is controversial and disturbing, he believes the whole Waitara incident was totally avoidable and the subsequent investigation outrageous. As a police sergeant, Saunders trained rookie officers on when to shoot and when to hold fire and he says if Constable A had followed his training correctly, Wallace wouldn't be dead. 60 Minutes reporter, Kim Webby talks to Saunders and to a former New Zealand police sergeant who backs Saunder's views. Webby also puts the case to Superintendent Mark Lammas who stands by the Police report and the Constable who shot Steven Wallace. [10/06/01]

  • 2Buying Back Time Successful middle aged NZ women say women can buy back time by using nutrition, body-building, and hormone replacement. Correspondent: Cameron Bennett Producer: David Lomas Middle age is becoming less intimidating for a new generation of women and men that are 'Buying Back Time' - hitting aging head on with a different mindset and more than just cosmetic surgery. This mindset of holding back the years is more than skin deep. People are now looking to rewind their bioclocks and cheat age with whatever it takes; fitness, nutrition, bodybuilding, and hormone replacement. A couple of kiwis who are prime examples of this new health revolution are Suzanne Prentice, who has lost nearly half her body weight and become a champion body sculptor at the age of 43 and yoga guru Mande White, who, into her fifties, has a body that is the envy of women half her age. Cameron Bennett talks with these women about their lifestyles as well as several others who are saying yes to growing old gracefully and even disgracefully. [10/06/01]

  • 3Mel Brooks A look at the Broadway show "The Producers" created by veteran comedy producer and actor Mel Brooks. Correspondent: Mike Wallace Producer: Jay Kernis The hottest ticket on Broadway for years is a show called The Producers. Word out is that it is the funniest musical show ever - and it's lunatic creator is none other than 'Mel Brooks'. Brooks was given 10.5 million dollars by a host of savvy producers to make the show - although they are all aware that he'll be taking the mickey out of what they do for a crust. In an extraordinary interview Mel Brooks tells Mike Wallace why a good Jewish boy from Brooklyn takes the micky out of Hitler as he does in this new musical. He says the only way to get back at Hitler is to ridicule him. [10/06/01]
