  • 1Life of Brian The Godfather of NZ crime - the life of Brian Curtis, recaptured last month after being on the run from prison for more than a decade. Was he caught through an act of betrayal? Correspondent: Kim Webby The 'Life of Brian' Curtis has just been blown out of the water. Busted in Manila after eight years on the run, New Zealand's most infamous fugitive, and the Godfather of New Zealand crime is now back behind bars, In this special two-part investigation, Kim Webby travelled to Manila with the police team that led the investigation and met the heartbroken family of Curtis - the wife and child he had to leave behind after his arrest, as well as disbelieving friends who miss the quiet man they had come to love. It is believed by some his downfall came about after a betrayal by a New Zealand associate. Since his audacious 1993 escape from maximum security, Curtis has been our most wanted man, and as 60 Minutes reveals, he hasn't been twiddling his thumbs overseas. Police are investigating if Curtis maintained his involvement with the New Zealand drug scene from his Manila hideout. Webby investigates how Curtis managed to criss-cross the globe without being caught and looks at his involvement with a proposed power company - which police suspect was a front for a multimillion-dollar fraud. • 2The Irish Problem The abortion boat which tried to defy both the Church and State in Ireland but failed. Correspondent: Liz Hayes Its booming economy and vibrant people has made Ireland one of Europe's most progressive countries. But it's also a country still dominated by the strict doctrines of the Catholic Church. And nowhere is this truer than on the issue of abortion. 'The Irish Problem' means there's no choice - women seeking a termination must make the lonely and expensive crossing to England. Internationally renowned singer Sinead O'Conner is one of a very few Irish women who have admitted publicly to having an abortion. She, like many others, believe Ireland is a scared and judgmental nation who have too long been dictated to by a church whose teachings have become the law of the land. And as Liz Hayes reports, their plight has infuriated more liberal Europeans. [05/08/01]

  • 3The Fame Game These days just about anyone can be famous. How to become a celebrity. Correspondent: Charles Wooley It was Andy Warhol who once famously predicted that, in the future, everyone would have 15 minutes of fame. Now 'The Fame Game' is everywhere - invading our screen in a country somewhere literally while you are watching this. It seems now that celebrity is no longer earned through great deeds - all of us, the theory goes, will eventually get our quarter hour of stardom. A recent example is the housemates in Big Brother. Complete unknowns when they went in, they've emerged fully-fledged celebrities - all because they appeared on television. As Charles Wooley discovered, their example is inspiring a generation desperate for their moment in the celluloid sun. So join him for the punter's guide to how you too can win at 'The Fame Game'.
