  • 1One child, two countries A New Zealand couple who went overseas to adopt a child but through legal wrangles ended up finding themselves breaking that country's laws. Correspondent: Cameron Bennett Producer: Max Adams For many couples, the sad reality that they are unable to have children of their own is a living nightmare. For New Plymouth couple, Lester and Julie Perry - the pain of this harsh reality was lessened when they learnt they had been granted approval by New Zealand authorities to adopt a child from overseas. 'One Child, Two Countries' didn't seem like a problem, but after a decision to bring a little Thai girl, Nattakan, to New Zealand to visit while they waited for the official adoption to take place, the couple became caught in a tangled web of bureaucracy and law - and their dream of becoming parents was shattered. Cameron Bennett meets the Perrys and learns more about the agonising wait to have their case revisited - and about their fight to clear their names and motives for the child they love and want to care for. • 2Kids with kids Teenage parents and how they cope with raising children as teenagers. Correspondent: Janet McIntyre Producer: John Shaw Some were too young to look after themselves let alone be responsible for their own children. But how things can change when a school and a community together help Rotorua's Kids with Kids. Some of these teenagers have been on the streets, one has done time, all of them have babies as young as a few months old and all now have an ambition to succeed, not for themselves but for their children. The Rotorua School for Young Parents is where this transformation is taking place. The school opened its doors in February. In a few weeks twenty young mums will be sitting exams, exams they are determined to pass. 60 Minutes reporter, Janet McIntyre, meets up with Lorraine, Jo, Jamie, Jenny and their classmates to hear their frank and moving stories. "You've got to realise that you can't think about yourself, you've got to think about your kids. They'll always be there and if you don't get anywhere they're not going to either," says Lorraine. "I'm really determined because I don't want my kids to go through what I went through, especially my daughter," mother of three, Jo Smith tells McIntyre. It's a moving and challenging experience, parents/pupils in a classroom doing the three 'R's' and right next door their children doing mash and milk. [19/08/01]

  • 3The Daily Show The comedy central network satire on serious news shows. Correspondent: Steve Kroft Producer: Franklin Devine The news is a serious business and news broadcasters take themselves seriously. For a satirist they are ripe for the picking. John Stewart, creator of The Daily Show fronts a cable network comedy programme that takes the mickey out of newsmakers and newsbreakers. His show, which isn't intentionally competing with the 11 o'clock news, but because of its sharp, edgy content, is stealing audiences nation-wide in America. We get up close and personal with Stewart as he talks about why the show is such a hit - and assures audiences that they have no issues with news - credibility, because, he claims, they have absolutely no credibility anyway.
