1The Boiler Room The Tauranga builder who fell for a multi-million dollar share scam and then travelled to Bangkok in an effort to recover his money. Like hundreds of others, Mt Manganui couple Ian and Gail Glover were tricked into investing their life savings in shares in a non-existent company. It appears these bogus share-brokers have ripped off small-time New Zealand and Australian investors to the tune of nearly 200 million dollars. In an attempt to ascertain whether his shares are indeed not worth the paper they’re written on, Ian Glover flew to Bangkok to try and find the people responsible for the scam. What he found revealed was an elaborate international money-laundering operation with possible ties to the IRA. 20/20’s Mike McRoberts went with Ian Glover to Bangkok and eventually they entered the heart of the scam – the so-called boiler room. There Ian got some answers to his desperate questions.
