About the show — Our Asian communities have had their representation in parliament doubled by the July general elections. A new face, Ashraf Choudhary who is of Pakistani descent won his seat as a Labour Party list candidate. He now joins Nationals Pansy Wong who is now in her third term in parliament... [Television New Zealand, Tuesday 22 October 2002, 06:30:11] About the show — Our Asian communities have received a bit of a battering lately. What with the fierce Immigration debate in and out of parliament and the governments decision to raise the levels of English for new migrants coming to this country. Asia Down Under has already addressed these issues in its programmes with reactions from the Asian communities but we will continue to keep viewers informed of any new developments. Its quite clear from feedback already received that many people in the Asian communities are very concerned the communities will suffer from divisions sparked by the recent debates. So if you have a view please message us through the email on this site. In the meantime the Asia Down Under series this year is continuing through to January 19 in 2003 because several times through the year the programme was not broadcast to accommodate such special events as the Commonwealth Games and the death of the Queen Mother. We will present a special Christmas edition on December 22 and some thought provoking programmes for the New Year. We also wish all people of all different backgrounds, cultures and religions the very best for the festive season and for the coming year. Our staff are all dedicated to bringing you the best stories from the Asian communities but you can send your story ideas and comments through this site or phone us on 09-379-7888 or fax us on 09-308-9888 anytime. Asia Down Under is made for TV ONE by Asia Vision Ltd with New Zealand on Air funding from an office at 501 Karangahape Road in Auckland. • 1Episode 30: Vegetarian chow mein Bharat's recipes Vegetarian chow mein 1 medium size carrot 2 tender celery leaves A small bunch of coriander 2 spring onions 4 pieces of pressed tofu (the brown but not spongy ones) [cut all the above into one inch long sticks] 5 dry shitake mushrooms soaked 5 button mushrooms, cut into thin slices Defrost the vegetarian ham. The ham is like a big salami and we need around four inches long to match the other ingredients. Sliced and then cut into one inch sticks. 1 packet Fujian noodles 2 Tbsp Lee Kum Kee vegetarian stir fry sauce 2 tsp Vegetarian MSG Soy sauce and salt to taste. Heat up a wok with a little bit of vegetable oil to high heat. Put the carrots and mushrooms in first, stir and cook for one minute. Then add the celery, stir and cook for another minute. Add in the pressed tofu, vegetarian ham, spring onion and coriander. Stir and cook for another minute. Add salt to taste. Add vegetarian stir fry sauce and vegetarian MSG. Fine tune the taste with soy sauce. Set aside with all the cooking juice. Use the same wok, heat up more oil and flavour with crushed garlic. Put the noodles in and cook till the noodles are soft. Mix in the cooked vegetables. Let the noodles soak up the cooking juice. Serve on a large plate. [Television New Zealand, Monday 28 October 2002, 20:13:44]
