1Hikoi - Inside Out Just over a week ago, former Labour MP Tariana Turia retained her seat as the representative for Te Tai Hauāuru, becoming the first Member of Parliament for the recently-established Maori Party. Her resignation from the Labour Party and the resulting by-election was initiated by her opposition to the Government's Foreshore and Seabed Legislation. The by-election result has confirmed that she has an overwhelming mandate within her electorate. Although many New Zealanders remain confused by the legal complexities of the Foreshore and Seabed debate, what remains clear is that it prompted united action by Maori on an unprecedented scale. This programme explores the hikoi experience from the perspective of two young women on their journey to Parliament and examines some of the concerns that compelled them to join tens of thousands of marchers on the biggest mobilisation of Maori in history.
