  • 1Traffic Jam Telecom promised us a super highway to the internet but at peak times it has turned into gridlock. They promised unlimited usage at maximum download speeds, but rather than going faster tens of thousands of consumers got a slower service. Whatsmore Telecom had been told by its own consultants that this would happen if it introduced unconstrained broadband. And yet they unleashed the service anyway. Now some of its consumers are complaining - not just about New Zealand's snail speed internet traffic but also the dodgy old roads it travels along. These complaints seem to be backed up by a new report released by the Ministry of Economic Development. The report finds that New Zealand has good broadband access availability, but that uptake of broadband as of June 2006 was an unchanged 22nd place out of the 30 OECD member countries. The quality of high-end multiplay broadband and advanced broadband business services couldn't be compared because they are not available in NZ. John Hudson discovers what Telecom hasn't told us about why we can't get the kind of internet speeds the rest of the world enjoys.
