There have been two standout cases: The bird massacre in rural South Canterbury and the grotesque and chilling act of two men inciting a pitbull to eviscerate live kittens. There's been a clamour for harsher penalties for acts of cruelty. But to try to understand the mindset of the perpetrator, Sunday talks to the people involved.
