Coming up on Te Karere... Four and a half years later and the trial of the four remaining people charged over the so-called Urewera terror raids has begun. Our team has the latest developments from court. A small community unites to support the family of one of its best known and loved residents. We have the latest developments over who will head the Waikato-Tainui executive. Due to the live nature of Te Karere, some segments will not be subtitled. Tena koutou katoa, and welcome to Te Karere. It's been a long time coming, but today the hearing for the Urewera Four began. 17 suspects were originally detained by police during the Ruatoki raid almost five years ago. However, charges against 13 were later dropped. The remaining four accused appeared in the Auckland High Court today on charges relating to organised crime and firearms. It's time for evidence surrounding the Urewera raids to be revealed. Nor is it new for Tame Iti to stand face to face, against charges with the law. Tame Iti stands accused alongside Urs Singer, Emily Bailey and Te Rangikaiwhiria Kemara, as the four remaining people accused with participating in an organised criminal group and firearms charges. I have no concerns at all. I am here as a caretaker for my people, and I have their aid and support. This isn't about Tame Iti, First, 17 suspects were raided and detained by police. Later, charges against 13 were dropped by the High Court, due to secret and unlawful survellance footage. The memory of the raids is still prevelent for some of the victims. We didn't know what they were doing. If you saw the images of the children going to school at that time, those are the memories I still suffer. They should be here to stop the fanatics from harrassing this group. The Urewera Four were only meant to appear before a judge, but requests were made for the case to be heard by a jury. Jury selection was held throughout today. They will hear the case over the next three months. However, many believe it won't take that long at all. Mana Party leader Hone Harawira was in the court today supporting the accused in the Urewera Raids case. He believes the charges will be dropped, and he joins us live now. The following will not be subtitled due to the live nature of the interview. Go to our website after 7pm to watch this interview with subtitles. A small community has pulled together to support the family of the late Stuart Symes, a well-known and loved resident who died in a car crash at the weekend. The small town is about an hour south of Gisborne and lies near Te Wairoa and north of Napier. A store that is usually crowded with customers, but today it stands lonely. The people of Rakaipaka are devastated by the loss of my brother. Expressions of love from the small community of Nuhaka to Stuart Symes, the store owner. It was here that 56-year-old lost his life in a fatal car crash. He was fit and healthy. He wasn't an ill man. Stuart Symes was returning from Gisborne when he collided with the Karangaroa family's vehicle. He was the only one to be killed. Others were taken to hospital. His brother says they're related to the Karangaroa family and are currently in discussions with them. We have two sisters in Hawke's Bay Hospital. They're both doing well. 'Papa Stu' was known for his involvement with youth sports, and his passion for rugby as he would often follow the local team. He encouraged and motivated people in his way. He leaves his wife, four children and six grandchildren. Yes, the kids will return home from Australia to Tanenuiarangi Marae. After the break, Tuku Morgan fights for his position as head of Waikato-Tainui; and details of the MMP review have been launched but why isn't Maori representation being discussed? Tuku Morgan has taken legal action against election results which some say no longer make him the head of the Waikato-Tainui tribal executive. The election was held yesterday at Hopuhopu and a statement was issued today by the chair of Te Kauhanganui. it said nine of ten members were voted on to the executive and Mr Morgan missed out. We spoke to all parties today. Due to the late arrival of this story, we are unable to provide subtitles. Please visit our website to view this story with English subtitles.. Tensions are mounting concerning who has governing rights over NZ waterways. At this stage, the Government stands to gain around $37 billion from ventures that utilise NZ rivers and lakes. Maori organisations who will be affected by the deal have gathered in Wellington presently. One of the organisations in attendance is The Taupo Waters Trust. The main thing for us is to be heard here and to make sure that the other stakeholders understand how significant this natural resource is to us. According to last year's report, Maori should rightfully have a lawful claim to the management of the waterways, but for the moment, the situation remains uncertain in regards to Maori rights in the SOE ACT. The Government will hold its last consultation hui with Maori over the partial sale of state-owned assets this week. Maori say the principles of the Treaty must be recognised for any sale to take place. Let's cross now to Hekia Parata, National's Maori spokesperson. The following will not be subtitled due to the live nature of the interview. Go to our website after 7pm to watch this interview with subtitles. The Election Committee is calling for a review on the MMP voting system. Today, the areas that are to be reviewed were released, but the place of the Maori seats in Parliament will not be scrutinised. They will also be looking at the matter of candidates who are list members as well as electorate members. To add to that, what percentage of the party vote should be needed to elect list members to Parliament? The Commission believes that the new MMP system will be ready for the next general elections in 2016. The review on the MMP will end at the end of May. After the break, the weather.
