An autopsy will be carried out in Los Angeles today to determine the cause of singer Whitney Houston's death. The body of the 48-year-old singer has now been removed from the Beverly Hills hotel where she died. The BBC's Alistair Leithead reports. SIREN BLARES It was midnight when her body was taken from the hotel ` a last image eerily reminiscent of another icon of her era, Michael Jackson. She'd been due to attend a big pre-Grammys party here last night hosted by Clive Davis, the man who made her name. She was expected to sing. There were tributes from far and wide for one of the biggest-selling female singers of all time. Whitney. Good evening. She was last seen leaving a nightclub on the night before she died. This is Grammys weekend ` the biggest party of the year for the music business. AUDIENCE CHEERS And this was her last appearance ` a spontaneous performance. She sang only briefly before waving to a cheering crowd. What happened in the hours before she died is still a mystery. She will be remembered today here in Los Angeles at the Grammys, where she won six times, and where there will be many tributes to an extraordinary life and an incredible voice. We're joined now by phone to ONE News reporter Jack Tame in Los Angeles. Jack, has any more light shed on the mystery of Whitney Houston's death? NO, NOT AT THE MOMENT. THE CORONER'S OFFICE ARE HOLDING TOXICOLOGY TESTS, BUT IT'S LOOKING LIKE SOME DAYS BEFORE THOSE RESULTS WILL BE RELEASED THEY'RE CONSIDERING PUTTING A SECURITY HOLD ON THOSE RESULTS SO THEY WON'T BE LEAKED SHE WAS IN HER BATHROOM FOR AN HOUR OR SO BEFORE HER ENTOURAGE BEGAN TO WORRY AS WITH SO MANY PREMATURE HOLLYWOOD DEATHS, THERE'S AN UNDERSTANDING THAT DRUGS MAY HAVE BEEN INVOLVED POLICE WON'T CONFIRM THAT AT THIS STAGE WHITNEY HOUSTON'S DAUGHTER HAS BEEN TAKEN TO HOSPITAL FOR THE SECOND TIME IN THE LAST 24 HOURS SHE'S SAID TO BE SUFFERING FROM EXHAUSTION How will Whitney Houston's death affect this afternoon's Grammy music awards? Rapper Kanye West is up for the most awards, with seven nominations. We will have more on ONE News at 4.30 and 6, and we'll keep you updated through the afternoon on our website at tvnz.co.nz. A group of silent protesters have gathered outside the High Court in Auckland today as the trial of the 'Urewera Four' begins. 17 people were originally arrested during the so-called terror raids in late 2007, but charges against 13 of them were later dropped. This followed a Supreme Court ruling that some video surveillance evidence was illegally obtained. The most well known of the four still facing charges is veteran activist Tame Iti. I think the whole thing` Uh, we're here to dispel the illusion that that's been put by the Crown, and so I leave the matter to this court to deal with that. I'll leave it to my` my legal counsel and see how we go. The trial was delayed this morning, but is expected to resume early this afternoon. Higher petrol prices, road tolls and even a hike in GST ` they're options being considered by the Auckland Council as ways to pay for an inner-city rail loop and other transport projects. The council has today released a discussion document which highlights 12 funding options. Mayor Len Brown says they should all be considered to avoid a transport crisis in Auckland. The council says that increasing taxes and rates alone will not cover an estimated $10b to $15b shortfall, and it's calling for Aucklanders to decide how to come up with extra money. Public submissions will be sought from the end of February. But Prime Minster John Key is warning Aucklanders to tread carefully, and says that any decision about funding will still need to be approved by the government. We're happy to have the discussion about what the infrastructure demands might be, and it's good now that Aucklanders will need to consider, you know, whether they will want to pay through this. But, you know, one thing to be careful of is, you know, we like 'user pays', but this may not be 'user pays'. I mean, they may well put a tax on you for something you're not gonna use. We need to consider whether we think that is warranted. I mean, we, for instance, closed down regional petrol taxes, because we thought the administration of them and the amount that was gonna be raised didn't warrant, actually, the new tax. So what we worry about is any tax sucks money out of the economy ` there's a limited amount of money in the economy. The time for public submissions on the transport plan closes on March the 24th. They'll then be considered by the council before a decision's made in June on which options to follow up. News is just through that Greek government has secured a parliamentary majority parliamentary majority to give the go ahead to austerity measures. This comes amid fierce clashes in athens between police and demonstrators opposed to the plans. The bbc's chris morris reports. As the sun came out in Athens, the mood began to darken. Riot police lined up outside parliament. Everyone knew what was likely to happen next. Among the crowds of protesters, even middle-class teachers have had enough of the politics of austerity. All the people in Greece do not want those measures, and we are here to` to protest against this crime that is about to take place in the parliament today. BOOM! And in a 5th year of deep recession, anger boils over quickly here. And with grim inevitability as night falls, more violence on the streets outside parliament. It seems the only way to get these controversial measures past is behind a ring of steel around this building. It's hardly normal democracy, but these are not normal times in Greece. And many here wonder whether the price is worth paying. To get another bailout from the Euro Zone worth 130b euros, the Greek parliament was told it had to pass another austerity package containing 3.3b euros worth of big cuts in public sector jobs, pensions and the minimum wage. Greece needs money before March 20th to reach debt repayments of 14.5b euros or it will go bankrupt. Europe has given Greece an ultimatum: here's the deal ` take it or leave it. Rescuers have pulled a girl (5) alive from the rubble of a house flattened by an avalanche in a mountain village in Kosovo. The girl's parents were both killed, but she was discovered when rescuers heard her voice and the ringing of a cellphone. The house was buried under 10m of snow. At least nine people died when the avalanche hit the village, destroying seven houses. The death toll continues to rise as freezing temperatures hold their grip on much of Europe. Hundreds of people have died and tens of thousands are isolated by heavy snow. Parts of England have recorded temperatures of minus-18 degrees. But in Poland, around 1500 people have braved the freezing conditions to dive into the Baltic Sea. The traditional winter swim is the culmination of a four-day festival in the town of Mielno. The swimmers, aged between 10 and 84, wore colourful fancy dresses and danced to rock music as they took to the water. Still to come on Midday ` today's sharemarket and business news. In sport ` a second generation sporting star wins in Melbourne. And after a long tour, at last a win for India over Australia. 1 With me now is Martin Allison from Craigs Investment Partners. Good afternoon, Martin. This item will be captioned live. For more, go to tvnz.co.nz and click on 'business'. THE GREEK PARLIAMENT HAS VOTED YES. IS THE GLOBLA ECONOMY SAVED? NO, AND THRE'S MORE OF THIS TO GO ON. THE HEAD OF THE EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT SAYS THAT GREECE HAS TO HONOUR ITS PROMISES THIS WAS A VERY SERIOUS STATEMENT. THEY'RE SAYING THEY'RE NOT GOING TO TOLERATE CORRUPTION ANY FUTHER SKY TV AND MAINFREIGHT ARE TO REPORT. FREIGHTWAYS CAME OUT WITH A PLEASING RESULT THIS MORNING. WHAT ALSO WAS VERY PLEASING - THE COMMENTS ABOUT GOING FORWARD. CONDITIONS ARE GETTING BETTER. STEEL AND TUBE CAME OUT WITH A WELL-REPORTED RESULT THINGS ARE STILL QUITE TOUGH IN NZ, BUT RELATIVELY WELL TO THE REST OF THE WORLD Sport ` Samoa's had a dramatic last-gasp victory over NZ in the final of the Las Vegas Sevens tournament. Earlier this morning, the Kiwis beat South Africa 20 points to 7 to make the final. Samoa opened the scoring to resounding cheers, but it didn't take long for the Kiwis to strike back with a try of their own. Former Taranaki representative Paul Perez then dotting down to see Samoa lead 12-5 at half-time. ...and it's Perez who gets away. They'll chase, but they won't catch him. He chases the whole way, but it's Perez. Another try to Samoa saw them take a 19-5 lead before NZ staged a comeback to equalise. But it wasn't enough. This was the final play of the match. Fa'osiliva goes for it. Fa'osoliva scores the winner! Final score 26-19 to Samoa. Their first tournament win of the series sparking scenes of jubilation at the ground. The Wellington Phoenix have been left fuming after being on the receiving end of two yellow cards during their 2-0 loss to the Brisbane Roar in the capital last night. Captain Andrew Durante and vice-captain Tim Brown were both given their fifth yellow cards for the season; Durante and the commentators clearly baffled by the decision. Just off camera here, Fred, and this is damaging. Durante's been yellow-carded. I'm not sure just why it's been given. There's nothing in the last couple of minutes of play that would suggest a yellow card for the Phoenix skipper, but he's got one. Durante was later told his card was for dissent. It's another blow to the side, who've now dropped to third on the A-league ladder and means both players will miss next week's game against leaders the Central Coast Mariners. Manchester City have reclaimed top position in the English premiership with a win over Aston Villa at Villa Park this morning. Villa held the visitors to 0-0 in the first half, but 62 minutes in, Manchester City's Joleon Lescott made the breakthrough. That's a live one, and fired in by Lescott! An absolutely vital Manchester City goal! Final score, 1-0 to Manchester City. They're not two points clear of Manchester United at the top of the table. Liverpool striker Luis Suarez has apologised for not shaking hands with Manchester United captain Patrice Evra before their Premier League football match at Old Trafford. The incident came during Suarez's first game back after an eight-match ban for racially abusing Evra. The BBC's Andy Swiss has more. It was supposed to be the moment of reconciliation. It was anything but. Luis Suarez's snub of Patrice Evra prompted shock, anger, and 24 hours later, an apology. In a statement, Suarez said ` But just as significant is a statement from Liverpool. The club have always defended Luis Suarez, but today they said they were extremely disappointed with him that he'd misled them by telling them beforehand he would shake hands. He's not only let himself down, they say, but also Kenny Dalglish, his teammates and the club. 'His behaviour was not acceptable.' Dalglish himself also apologised for his brisk post-match interview. I think you're bang out of order to blame Luis Suarez for anything that happened here today, right? A new spirit of contrition at Anfield, and Suarez's in particular was welcomed by the fans. But Liverpool's image has been dented. After four months of Acrimony, the sport hopes lessons have been learned. Manchester United said they accepted the apology and now wanted to move on. So will football after one of the sport's ugliest sagas. Wales have made it two from two after defeating Scotland in the Six Nations rugby tournament this morning. After going to the break 3-3, the Warren Gatland-coached team produced a strong second half at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff. Alex Cuthbert dotting down within the first two minutes before Leigh Halfpenny took care of the rest. Now they've got... time to get it out wide quickly. Should be another try. It's Cuthbert! It's gone to Halfpenny. Halfpenny has the try! Final score 27-13; Halfpenny scoring 22 of Wales' 27 points. In golf, there's been a grandstand finish at the Australian Women's Open at Royal Melbourne, with six golfers tied for the lead at end of 72 holes. It meant a sudden-death play-off. The winner was American teen Jessica Korda, who has her own sporting ties to the country. The ABC's Lisa Maksimovic explains. It's another four seasons in one day. American Jessica Korda (18) was on the brink of one of the rarest sporting doubles imaginable. Her father, Peter, won the Australian Tennis Open in 1998. The youngster was unrattled early, but then suffered a series of bogeys. As a youngster, would have been wonderful if she could hold on, but... it's all such a` a learning experience. Amateur Lydia Ko (14) showed what she was capable of. Look at this. This is` Oh my goodness gracious. That is ridiculous. The title could have settled when the Korean duo So Yeon Ryu and Hee Kyung Seo reached the 18th,... ALL GASP Oh! Didn't even hit the hole! ...but both squandered their chances, putting Jessica Korda back in the mix. She, too, missed her opportunity... It's not gonna come back. It's a tap in. She'll be in a play-off. All tied at three-under. The six women return to the 18th to play-off in sudden death. After 45 minutes came this deciding moment. Jessica Korda has one hand on the trophy. And she had two hands on it when Julieta Granada failed to match Korda's birdie. It feels so good. (LAUGHS) And that was a tough round. It was a lot of ups and downs. A slice of history at Royal Melbourne. India's snared a thrilling final-over victory against Australia in their one-day international at the Adelaide Oval. Batting first, a sluggish Australian side struggled to 269 for 8, Peter Forrest the highlight of their innings, hitting 66 on debut. There it is. AUDIENCE APPLAUDS Another young Australian getting a chance and doing well. But it wasn't enough to hold off India's batsmen, with Gautem Gambhir setting the platform with a cool 92. Skipper MS Dhoni then led the rest of the charge, a picture of calm under pressure as India went into the final over needing 13 for the win. And he's gone down the ground. I think it's massive. He has cleared it! That is a phenomenal hit from Dhoni! Turns it round. There's gonna be two ` it might even be four. Dave Warner's chasing after it,... flicks it in, but they'll run three, won't they? And that's victory to India. India savoring a rare victory over the Aussies. Still to come on Midday ` I'll be back with the afternoon weather. Now to the weather. For weather, see tvnz.co.nz Thanks for joining us.
