Tena koutou katoa, and welcome to Te Karere. The court has given its sentence in the case of the truck driver that crashed into a school bus last year in Ruatoki. The driver has been sentenced to 5-months community service, 9-months supervision, and is disqualified from driving for two years. The judge said that he was fortunate to come from a forgiving community. Joe Nika Morehu was charged with Reckless Driving resulting in injuries to the children, false logbook entries and driving for over five and a half hours without a break. Police say Morehu took the corner wrong, forcing him to hit a bus that had stopped to let off children. Morehu was also charged with drunk driving because three months before the crash, he crashed into a fence, a tractor and a pole whilst driving intoxicated. Kim Dotcom is taking court action against police in relation to how he was treated in their investigation. He says police broke the law when they raided his home. In relation to that, the lawyers of Tame Iti and Te Rangikaiwhiria Kemara are still decided their course of action in the Court of Appeals. are still deciding their course of action in the Court of Appeals. They're hoping to appeal against their guilty verdict Some say that the police were just as brutal to Kim Dotcom as they were in the Urewera Raids when they suspected terrorist activities. I spoke with Willie Te Aho in Hamilton recently for his thoughts on these allegations and on other current Maori affairs. Yes, we've looked carefully at the Crown's actions in Dotcom's investigation. The Crown are sneaky. And in regards to Tuhoe, the whole country know the police and Crown did wrong against them. If the Crown or a Commissioner were to review this case they would expose the wrongdoing done. There's talk of Maori business offices to be opened in China to support sales between Maori and Chinese. This idea came as a Maori business group visited China recently. Here's more. The biggest challenge facing the company owned by 57 iwi organisations is finding new produce to sell to China at the right price. Fostering relationships, including the most recent trip with Pita Sharples has been top priority. Companies like Aotearoa Fisheries have established exports to China, and Simon Jones' most recent trip highlighted the desirability of our food to the Chinese. It seems the future for other companies is to branch out into China and it looks very promising. Similarities between the cultures and customs of Chinese and Maori means business deals. Hinerangi Goodman has the details. Minister of Social Development, Paula Bennett says that of 149 social workers, 50 will start in Northland, South Auckland and the Hawkes Bay. By putting more social workers in these schools, teachers will be supported in putting their focus back on teaching students. The Minister wasn't available for comment at this time, and at the moment, students are enjoying their school holidays. But when they reopen, the first wave of social workers will start in their assigned schools like this one behind me.
